The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge which was the longest suspension bridge in the world upon its opening. Its construction began in January 1933 and was completed in April of 1937. The bridge gets its name because it spans what is known as the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay onto the Pacific Ocean.
