Construction of Independence Hall began in 1732, under the guidance of Andrew Hamilton, the Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly.It has sometimes been referred to as the birthplace of the United States.  From 1775 - 1783 the Hall served as the principal meeting place ofthe Second Continental Congress.  The Declaration of Independence was drafted, debated and approved here before being signed on July 4, 1776.
